Psychoanalitical theory of the first two acts:
In this text I am going to write an interpretation from the psychoanalytical criticism point of view, of the first 2 acts of the play “Hamlet” by Shakespeare.
Psychoanalytical
criticism is based on analyzing the function of unconscious impulses that
assembles the human behavior.
The posture
from which I am going to analyze is the Freudian criticism.
Act 1:
Claudius and Gertrude’s marriage and the
reaction of Hamlet. Seeing it from Freud’s perspective we can apply here the
theory of the Oedipus complex. We might say that the reason why Hamlet is so
mad at Gertrude and Claudius is because he is jealous of Claudius. He has
somehow more than a mother- son affection towards Gertrude. Hamlet has also a
super ego which is considered by his actions, he tends to think too much about
himself and what everything that happens around him has some reflection on him
Hamlet is sad and Claudius says to him to think
as if he was his father. In this part we can analyze Claudius behavior, he says
to Hamlet to stop being so sad about his father’s death and that father’s die.
This can also be caused by Claudius conscience. One that doesn’t let him see
Hamlet so depressed because it makes him remember that he murdered King Hamlet.
Hamlets desire to commit suicide but he says
that it is a sin to do it. This is an
example of Hamlet’s super ego which is shown when hamlet says his reason to not
commit suicide; this super ego is the part of the mind which always cares about
what society thinks of him. One aspect of this is the suicide, which is seeing
in religion as a sin, a statement that says that if you suicide you are a
sinner. Because he could have said, that
he is not going to kill himself because he is going to solve his problems but
instead he focus in the social part, specifically beliefs and culture.
Act II:
In the
second act, I’m going to focus on Hamlets madness and Claudius and Gertrude
spying on Hamlet.
Hamlets
supposed madness. This part of the text can be seen as a way of using things
emotionally. He uses this to have time to think about his plans to avenge his
step father. This is a way to evade
facing the mission that his father gave him.
One of the reasons could be that he is not sure of the ghost being his
father so that way he was planning on making a play in which he would portrait
the kings murder and see Claudius reaction.
Claudius
and Gertrude tell Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to spy on hamlet. This is a way
of demonstrating the ego of Claudius who is afraid that Hamlet is planning
something against him. This can also be seen as a way of knowing how Claudius
reacts to certain situations.
Through
this literary criticism I have analyzed the character Hamlet and Claudius.
Divergence:
One of the times,
that I consciously used divergence in a social situation was, when my father
try to take me to a cockfight in Pachacamac. I hate those fights, in my opinion
they are a nonsense type of entertainment.
I made the
choice to use divergence to convince him of not going there and instead going
to the cinema. Because he and my sister really wanted to go and bet for whom
they though was the winner cock.
It was effective
the use of divergence because we had different opinions based on this the question
of going or not going to the cockfight. Each of us used different arguments,
for example my sister used the one that this was a type of cultural entertainment and I responded to that
saying that this was a cruel event in which people make those cock fight just
to entertain some people and that not everything that was a tradition was
acceptable to others, because each of us have different types of opinion.
